Wikinomics

Wikinomics is the combination of ideas and economics. Making money from ideas. Its the practice of collaboration. Published by Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams in 2006.

Peering is the idea of free sharing material on the internet. In terms of music, Soundcloud is a good example of sharing and creation of music. https://soundcloud.com/

Free Creativity is a natural outcome of the free market, attempting to regulate and control online creativity, like trying to hold back the tide.

Possible future of the internet

Moat and Drawbridge theory

  • Suggests the world of the Internet would be heavily centralised, dominated by a few big players with their own rules in “big-boys’ clubs.”
  • Conflicts would be resolved through negotiation, not competition.
  • Connections between networks would be the result of extensive negotiation and deal making.
  • There would likely be strong regulation as governments seek to impose some public interest obligations and perhaps even controls on the equipment users can connect to the network.
  • Much content would be proprietary and protected by strong intellectual property rights.
  • Governments would control the behaviour of networks and network users through legal mechanisms and sanctions.
  • Barriers to entry would be high, with little incentive to expand networks beyond the largest and richest customers or regions.
  • Innovation would be slow, only occurring when it would benefit the network owners.
  • All players would have close political links to their mutual benefit.

From what started as a simple youtube channel has now become a website.

This rise to YouTube stardom supports Michael Welsch's idea of how the online media and how this ability to upload and share your opinions has changed peoples personality. The ability to sit infront of a webcam and broadcast yourself to what appears to be an empty camera but has millions of viewers behind it.

Crowdsourcing is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.

Kickstarter has an extremely high success rate and a short documentary has been oscar nominated.

David Gauntlett Web 2.0

Over the years the media definitely has changed, and what david was saying is right. In the past it was large corporate companies who dominated the media, both radio and television, however since the evolvement of the internet people have become more detached from the media giants and produce their own videos and channels to share with the billions across the globe.

David stated that before, it was the media gods who had the power, people would shape their day around the television or radio schedule. This shows what a strong impact these giants had. However as the ease of access to the internet through laptop, smartphone or tablet has increased people can create their own work. People such as Barak Obama or Gordon Brown.
